Children’s piggy bank: collecting money for the trip to Ukrainian Crimea when the war is over (Lubny, Poltava region)
[In Spring 2022] My mother at that point [used to say] “Crimea is ours, we shall go there in summer!” This was my mother’s position. And the children, my brother and sister, they drew the map of Ukraine with Crimea, and attached it to a jar – and this became their piggy bank, the money for the trip to Crimea. They had never been to Crimea, they just heard that there is such a place “Crimea.” I had been taken there, but they had not. And they couldn’t understand, why they couldn’t go there themselves. So, this became a symbol of sorts for the children. <…> I was there in my childhood, and I used to tell them about it, and my little brother was looking [at the map], finding places in Crimea I had been to. And I said: “I’ve never been to the “Swallow’s Nest,” although I wanted to go there so much!” (UJRI_070_KAZ_1) (for “Swallow’s Nest” see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swallow%27s_Nest)
